creating a nontoxic bedroom that matches your aesthetic

I am someone who is home decor obsessed, but the materials I bring into my bedroom are super important to me.

Creating a restful and cozy bedroom environment goes beyond just choosing the right decor and colors. When it comes to promoting a good night's sleep and overall well-being, paying attention to the materials used in your bedroom is more important than you may think. We spend a ton of time in our bedroom, or at least we should if we get enough sleep. Investing in nontoxic materials in your bedroom not only reduces your exposure to harmful chemicals but also includes investing in high-quality products that will last you a lot longer than other options. Let's explore some essential items for a minimal, nontoxic bedroom that can help you create a clean, cozy, space while maintaining your desired style and aesthetic.

Bedding:

One of the most important elements of a nontoxic bedroom is the bedding. Opting for organic cotton sheets, duvet covers, and pillowcases can make a significant difference in your sleep quality and, honestly, is way more cozy. Conventional cotton is known to be treated with pesticides and synthetic chemicals, which can cause skin irritations and can even disrupt your sleep. Organic cotton, on the other hand, is grown without harmful chemicals, making it a safer and more sustainable choice for your bedding needs.

When shopping for bedding, it’s best to avoid polyester fabrics.

Polyester, a widely used synthetic fabric, is often found in bedding, curtains, and upholstery. However, it is important to note that polyester fabrics can be problematic when it comes to toxicity. Polyester is made from petroleum, a non-renewable resource, and its production involves the use of harmful chemicals and high energy consumption. Additionally, polyester releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air, which can contribute to indoor air pollution and respiratory issues. These VOCs can linger in the bedroom environment, potentially causing discomfort and disrupting your sleep. Choosing natural and nontoxic alternatives like organic cotton or linen can help you minimize your exposure to these harmful substances and create a healthier bedroom space.

My favorites…

My absolute favorite bedding is from Parachute Home. I currently have the Brushed Cotton set and we swear it feels like a hotel in our bedroom every night. I can’t rave enough about how soft and luxurious these feel and look. I love neutrals and earth tones in the bedroom and Parachute has the best options.

Other Materials:

In addition to organic cotton bedding, it's essential to consider the fabrics used in your bedroom furniture. Performance upholstery fabrics, although durable, often contain chemicals like formaldehyde and flame retardants, which can release harmful fumes into the air. These PFAS chemicals are notorious for their adverse health outcomes, and have coined the nickname “forever chemicals” due to their ability to persist in our bodies and environments for extended periods of time. Instead, choose natural materials like linen or organic cotton for your curtains, upholstery, and rugs.

Try to avoid fabrics that are advertised as “stain resistant” or “water resistant” when choosing furniture for the bedroom.

Fragrances:

Pay attention to the laundry detergent you use for your bedding and clothing. I always recommend opting for nontoxic and fragrance-free options to avoid skin irritations and respiratory issues. There are amazing laundry detergents that smell luxurious but minus the harmful ingredients. My favorite is from Dirty Labs, and the Murasaki Scent is actually incredible. You would never know this is clean, I promise.

If you’re like me, you know the joy of lighting a nice candle to make the bedroom extra cozy prior to bedtime. Unfortunately, candles can be really problematic in terms of ingredients, especially involving fragrance blends.

It is best practice to choose soy and beeswax and say no to paraffin wax when shopping for candles. Paraffin waxes off gasses toxins into the air, and this is especially problematic in combination with a toxic fragrance blend.

Summing Up:

I know just hearing the word “nontoxic” can throw people off and I want to remind you that there are incredible options at every price point that are just like your “regular” products. This is especially true for home decor.

To me, a serene bedroom is one that includes earth tones. Try to stick to neutral colors when choosing bedding and furniture. I love organic materials such as cotton, linens, and wood in the bedroom as well.

Ultimately, I think just being aware of the materials in your bedroom is an amazing first start. It definitely doesn’t need to happen overnight and I think replacing items as they need to be replaced is the best option. A huge aspect of living “nontoxic” is being sustainable, and throwing away new items is wasteful.
